Knievel guest starred in a few cop shows as himself. It was like Captain America occasionally hanging out with Iron Man and Thor. As a pre-schooler, I remember thinking Knievel was mates with Elvis because they dressed similar.

Steve Austin ended up playing The Fall Guy (Lee Majors was also a stuntman in his earlier career). I also associated him with bigfoot, UFOs and NASA. It was all one continuous spectacle for a small kid, like confusing Planet of the Apes for a part of wild west history (the Piaget-like 'truth' of its metaphor, I suppose). There must be some subconscious long-term effect of this blurring on a certain generation.

As for Reagan - there was that notorious speech when he claimed to have 'liberated' a concentration camp in 1945, when he never even left the US. Apparently he got his acting break from being able to commentate on cancelled football games to keep the sponsors happy.David K Waynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10756535951359716522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3355227236397241799.post-7505104609392354492011-03-29T11:53:02.786+01:002011-03-29T11:53:02.786+01:00When I was a kid, I associated him very much with ...When I was a kid, I associated him very much with Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man (both had dolls modelled on them).

They both seemed to stand on a very thin line between fact and fiction - A lot of Kneivel's contraptions, such as that canyon-rocket, seemed so unlikely that they couldn't be real.

Again, it ties into the idea of America being an Empire Of Children, the blurring of the distinction between reality and fantasy. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Evel was a fan of that TV show, in the same way that Reagan mistook old war films for real events.Phil Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214245608032305452noreply@blogger.com
