Its a bit more academic and specific than 'When the Lights Went Out' but 'Rebel Rank and File' is good http://www.versobooks.com/books/282-rebel-rank-and-file
Hoberman's 'The Dream Life' is good for the interface between movies/spectacle and politics, but it kinda stops around 1974. Also, 'Hollywood From Vietnam to Reagan' is good on ideological shifts, if your going for a film angle. Then for a good overview of the hippie/occult influence on 70s lifestyles, there's Gary Lachman's 'Turn Off Your Mind'.

"The Seventies" by Bruce J. Schulman is rather good, as I recall. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/030681126X
Nice one, gents!
"The Culture Of Narcissism" by Christopher Lasch is pretty essential imho.
